Review of .com/Unity!? Get Real... Estate! for the Melbourne Fringe Festival
I hereby declare .com/Unity!? Get Real… Estate! compulsory viewing for Fitzroyalty and other Yarra dwellers.
This hilarious cabaret show is directed by Melbourne’s cabaret queen Ella Filar and devised and performed by Komissar Kabaret and KGB. This is what the Fringe is all about; local acts, alternative styles and a whole lot of talent.
The ninety-minute production features the City of Yarra’s favourite residents, like Mary McKillop, the Brunswick Street yuppies, boozing bums and organic obsessed vegans.
Living a long-necks throw away from Smith Street Safeway, this author could relate warm-heartedly to the jokes about real estate prices and dope smoking. The scene with three workers bashing fruit with their fists to ensure it looked ‘organic enough’ unleashed plenty of laughter.
Being opening night the actors and musicians’ performances were, if not polished, then certainly entertaining. Filar’s hilarious characters are portrayed by her cast of all ages with obvious theatrical talent.
The performance of Miranda Troynar cannot go unmentioned. Her strong, husky voice belting out rousing cabaret solos almost steals the show, and is a great contrast to the range of musical styles Filar incorporates, such as hip hop and electro.
The contrast between Yarra pre-white man and today’s ridiculous real estate debates put things in perspective. Even the setting in Milos’ ABC Gallery in Collingwood is eclectic Yarra at its best, with paintings strewn around the walls, a funky, homely bar and stalls made up of old couches, arm chairs and wooden perches.
It’s a comforting experience to watch a play that’s all about your hometown, your corner pub, your local supermarket and the characters with whom you share your neighbourhood. Add a funny script, jazzy tunes and memorable performances, and a great night is on for all.
